Lo Gyalpo Jigme Foundation
The Lo Gyalpo Jigme Foundation (LGJF) was conceived in 1994 and officially registered in 2002. We are committed to the preservation and promotion of the tradition, medieval architecture, and heritage of the Loba people. The Loba people are ethnically Tibetan inhabitants of Upper Mustang, Nepal. We preserve and promote Loba culture by supporting education, healthcare, infrastructure, nature conservation, and restoration of art and heritage.
How it started
Our journey began in 1994 when the Late King Gyalpo Jigme Palbar Bista requested Richard Blum, Founder and Chairman of the American Himalayan Foundation (AHF) to support his quest in restoring and reviving the centuries-old monasteries and monuments of Lomanthang, Mustang. This partnership has continued for nearly three decades and evolved to include support for the education, infrastructure, and healthcare of the Loba people.
Our Approach
The Loba people are the heart of the Jigme Foundation’s work in Mustang. We believe that in order for any tradition and culture to survive and thrive, we need to protect and empower the local communities who are the true guardians of the land and its cultural heritage. Following a grassroots approach, we cater our programs to the needs and issues of the Loba people and strengthen the community through innovative initiatives.
Our Mission and Vision
The Lo Gyalpo Jigme Foundation’s mission is to preserve the unique Loba culture and heritage of the upper Mustang by supporting education, healthcare, the livelihood of local communities, nature conservation, and the restoration of art and heritage.
